We were there for an SPCA Suncoast Adoption Event and I think they wanted to adopt one of our puppies but Mom said no. Double Trouble was enough for her!

The Volunteer Way Will Provide a Free Pancake Breakfast – January 14, 2012



The Volunteer Way, IHOP restaurants, the Knights of Columbus and the Cornerstone Community Church,working to make life better for the less fortunate of our community, will continue into 2012 with their monthly “Free PancaThe Volunteer Way Will Provide a Free Pancake Breakfast - January 14, 2012ke Breakfast for All”

The next breakfast will take place on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the Knights of Columbus Hall located at 5850 K of C Drive in Port Richey (behind the Honda dealer on 19 and Ridge Road), from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Last year breakfast was served to an average of 500 people every month.

The West Pasco Health Department will be providing seasonal flu shots for free. No appointments are necessary.  Vaccinations will be given on a walk in basis. Supplies are limited.  The Volunteer Way Will Provide a Free Pancake Breakfast - January 14, 2012

The Cornerstone Community Church is providing many activities for children such as face painting and crafts. Everyone is welcome; needy families, homeless people and those that would like to assist The Volunteer Way  in serving the needy. Come and learn how The Volunteer Way is serving Pasco County and the surrounding areas.

Donations are welcome but not necessary.  All funds collected will be used to buy food for the less fortunate of our community. The Volunteer Way Food Bank assists more than 15,000 Pasco County families in need.

Mom and Baby Indian Flying Fox Bats at Animal Kingdom-Orlando


The Indian Flying Fox Bat has a wing span of up to 4 feet. Despite Mom and Baby Indian Flying Fox Bats at Animal Kingdomtheir large size, they only eat fruit. The largest of all bats, it is called the Flying Fox because the  head is shaped like a fox’s head, and it has reddish-brown fur. Found in Asia & Australia, they live in tropical swamps and forest.

We watched this Mom and baby chatting to each other at the Bat exhibit in Animal Kingdom. The males can weigh up to 4 lbs; the females 2 lbs.

They are interesting creatures and may fly as far as 30 miles away looking for food, and they usually live near a body of water or close to the coast.  Flying Foxes live in camps of several hundred to thousands. Old Pasco Hardware Building in New Port Richey-Florida

Old Pasco Hardware Building in New Port Richey-Florida


The Old Pasco Hardware Building sitting on Grand Boulevard in New Port Richey-Florida is distinguished by it’s multi-sided, copper-topped cupola above the northwest corner.
 
Built in 1921 or 1926 (depending which history you read)  in the Spanish style with a stucco and tile exterior.

It was for many years, home to Pasco Hardware. Still in use today, it has been used continually for retail stores, restaurants, and offices. The upper story has been used as living quarters and offices.

I took this picture earlier this year; you can see the cupola is still present and makes for a very distinctive building in down-town New Port Richey-Florida. The exterior hasn't changed much in the last 90 years; it is still a great looking building.

The Colors of Christmas - Red, Green and Blue


The Colors of Christmas - Red, Green and BlueWhen you think of Christmas, what’s the first color you see in your mind? Red, of course. Santa’s stylish red suit, his red cherry cheeks, those gorgeous red poinsettias. Second is Green: Christmas trees, garland, baskets of greens.


But there’s another color that affects a lot of people at the Holidays--Blue. When I was in my early twenties, newly married, and arrogant about life as we all are in our twenties, my Mother-in-Law would tell me she was “blue” at Christmas. I wasn’t sure what she meant...I thought how can anyone be depressed at Christmas; it’s the most wonderful time of the year.

It seems a lot of people are blue at Christmas. Many people are alone, have families living a long way away, or have no family left. Some can be  depressed even in the middle of large gatherings.

The Colors of Christmas - Red, Green and BlueAs my own Mom got into her mid to late sixties, she would cry buckets through every Christmas celebration. I tried to talk to her about it because it was seriously upsetting the kids in the family. I felt helpless and didn't know how to make it "all better" for her.

Depression at the holidays is very prevalent leading me to think that maybe once the kids are all grown up and we don’t have the excitement of making Christmas bright for them, our expectations suffer a downturn.  





If this is a problem for you; here are some ways to cope:

1. Don’t drink; alcohol just exacerbates the feelings of melancholy by depleting the brain of serotonin-the feel good chemical that the brain needs to maintain a normal mood.

2. If you don’t want to be alone, volunteer at your local church or soup kitchen.

3. Decorate for you! Decorate with lots of lights and colorful decorations to brighten you whenever you look around.

4. Visit a nursing home, take cookies, magazines, flowers. Those folks are truly lonely.

5. Take walks in your neighborhood and enjoy (really enjoy) the Christmas lights and decorations. Think about how you might have decorated this house or that house.

6. Start a good book or watch a truly funny movie. Immerse yourself in funny jokes or movies or books; pass up watching "It's a Good Life" on TV-have you ever seen anything that makes you cry more than that?

7. Develop an Attitude of Gratitude. Be thankful for everything you have and have had all your life. Be happy to be alive for another Christmas miracle.

8. If you have an elderly person in your neighborhood, someone who is alone, please take a few minutes to say Hello and maybe drop off some cookies or a small gift. You will feel better if you do something for someone else and so will they.

Relax, breathe deeply, enjoy the days as they pass. Happy Holidays.

J. David Wright is a member of my Rotary Club of Trinity. He’s also a TThis is What Happens When You Aim Your Camera at J. David Wright - Photographer
professional photographer and the resident photographer extraordinaire to our club (He’s such a good guy--always working at our events-taking lots of pictures of the stars of Trinity Rotary).

Our Holiday Dinner was last week (see post) and David was hard at work at usual. I wanted to get a picture of him but look what happened. He’s a lot faster on the shutter button than I am :) My picture of David was a total blur.
