Florida Blueberry Festival is May 4-5-6 2012 in Brooksville Florida

Florida Blueberry Festival is May 4-5-6 2012 in Brooksville Florida

The First Annual Florida Blueberry Festival is almost here.Come out and have fun and enjoy the blueberries.

There will be arts and crafts, live entertainment all day, contests, street entertainers,festival fare, gourmet foods, and, of course, blueberries and blueberry shortcakes. There will be a Blueberry Pie Baking Contest and a Pie Baking Contest (non-blueberry), a monster transmission car show, and more.

The 3 Day Festival will be held in the square around the old courthouse. The
Friday Night Parade kicks off at 6:30 and will feature 130 floats with
representation from the 15 counties located in the central blueberry
growing region of Florida. For those who want to party until the
blueberries bloom, the evening will conclude in the City Park with a
Blueberry Wine stomping contest, live music.Check out these links: The schedule of events is full of fun. And For a map of the location.

There will be great entertainment and you can check out the schedule here. 60’s Groove will be there, along with Azmyth, the Blues Brothers, and many more.

Blueberries are so good for you and the latest research says blueberries have been shown to help in the fight against Alzheimer's. They are full of anti-oxidants and fight aging, cancer, and heart desease. So I'm going to the Festival and buy lots of blueberries (you can freeze them).

Visit a Real Haunted House-The May Stringer House in Brooksville-FL

Called one of the most haunted sites in Florida, the May Stringer House in Brooksville, Florida has a Halloween Fest on Oct 28 & 29, 7pm-11pm. To make plans to attend the Haunted House, call 352-799-0129 or go to their website for more information: May Stringer House

The 160 acre site was deeded in 1843 to Richard Wiggins as part of the Armed Occupation Act. John May bought the property in 1855 and donated 15 acres to the county to be used as the county seat.

The 12 room, 4 story home was built in 1856 as a a two story, four room home, and was remodeled in the early 1900’s to its present Queen Ann, 7 gable style.

The May family lived in the home for several years, John May died in 1858 and his wife remarried several years later. She died in 1869 giving birth to Jessie May. Jessie died a few years later. It is said that some have heard the child crying for her mother. Both are buried on the grounds of the museum at an unmarked site.

Later acquired by Dr. Sheldon Stringer family sold it to the county to be used as a museum. The May Stringer House is on the National Registry of Historic Places.

The Museum is a non-profit organization and depends on donations and it’s wonderful volunteers to stay open and maintain it’s many (over 10,000) artifacts. It’s located at 601 Museum Ct., Brooksville, FL 34601

Wooden You Love These Toys?

Cruising through the Brooksville Farmers Market a couple of weeks back, we met Mr. Warren Jensen (on the right) of Spring Hill, Florida - AKA “Greatpop.” Mr. Jensen makes and sells these wonderful wooden car, trains, and planes. I have always loved wooden toys (especially trains) so I had to take pictures and get his information so I could share his creations with you.

If you would like to see Greatpop’s wonderful wooden toys; you can usually find him at the flea market in downtown Brooksville-Florida -in front of the courthouse on Main Street. His email is wjensen14@tampabay.rr.com. Mr. Jensen doesn’t have a Facebook page or a website.

And, look at those great prices!

When I asked him why he made all these; he told me with a chuckle that it keeps him out of trouble with his wife.

The whole family can enjoy Central Pasco & Gulf Railroad Happy Halloween Train Rides. The rides are Oct 21 & 22 and Oct 28 + 29, 2011. 7pm-10pm. Adults are $5, kids $3, and under 2 are free. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.
