Green Key Beach in New Port Richey-Florida was once known as Deer Island, and was homesteaded by Cora and J. G. Brown in the early 1920’s. The construction materials for their new home were ferried across from Manor Beach because there wasn’t a road going out to Deer Island. The road was built in the 1930’s to connect it to the mainland.
Green Key as it came to be known has had an interesting and controversial history over the years with failed development; tons of sand brought in and washed away a few months later; public help in filling the beach- certain things were not allowed like garbage, stumps, auto bodies, appliances, tin cans, etc. Green Key Beach in New Port Richey is now a pretty place with picnic shelters and walkways for viewing the mangroves.
Green Key Beach is now in what has become the Robert K. Rees Memorial Park; Mr. Rees was instrumental in getting Green Key saved for the New Port Richey community when he served on the county commission. Mr. Rees died in 1992.
