My very old Christmas Cactus bloomed for Thanksgiving!

I have had this Christmas Cactus for at least 16-17 years and it was old when I got it from one of my sellers. He moved out and left the poor thing sitting on the patio. I would go over to check or show the house and water it, but it looked so forlorn that I asked the seller if I could take it home. He said I could.

I've had her ever since and she has gone through several moves, an accident that my husband caused by carrying her through the porch and forgetting that the ceiling fan was on (dirt and pieces of plant everywhere). But she still blooms beautifully every year. They are so easy to start that she has many children all over our area from all the ones that I give away. I have several others but this one's my favorite (don't tell the others).

Happy Thanksgiving to you all.

What a beautiful pre-Christmas treat!  My mom has one of these from my great grandma who passed away in the late 70s - STILL!

Happy Thanksgiving!

That's great to hear that your Mom still has one that old. They can live a long time. I love your doggie picture. Are they rescues?

Wow, that is gorgeous!  I woke to 26 degrees this morning.  They tell me we have tied for the coldest Thanksgiving Day on record here in Sacramento.  I believe it!

Oh Brrrrr, Myrl. That's way to cold for me although we did go down to 28 last winter for a day or two.

My gardening guru sitting three feet away from me says that if it is blooming like that at Thanksgiving, it’s probably a Thanksgiving cactus. Plant geneticists have succeeded in creating Christmas cactus hybrids that bloom at Thanksgiving and Easter. You’ll know which one you have by when it is most prolific in blooming.

Hi Toni, Happy Thanksgiving,
That is a beauftiful cactus. Ma it live forever.
My cacti are almost that old and are in partial bloom now and will be fully opened in another week or so. I have the pink variety. They are from the mother plant I gave away about 15 years ago. I feed mine Osmecote and they seem to like a new feeding in Sept and again in Feb. and are prolific bloomers.

Toni, that is beautiful!  Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi Jim, some years this one blooms at Christmas so I think it may have more to do with the weather (I keep them on the porch) and the fertilizer schedule. But, no matter when it blooms, it's gorgeous. Your Guru is right though, there are specific ones for Thanksgiving and Easter. I have an Easter one too.

William - Thank you; I do a smaller fertilizer feeding all the time; something I learned from raising African Violets for show.

Toni - when my mother was alive she had one that looked just like this.  How beautiful, I want a piece!

The funny thing is, Diane, that this one used to be pink. I still can't figure out how it changed.
