What could be better than to be an Osprey (a Raptor) resting on the flagpole on a breezy day in New Port Richey, Florida. Ospreys are fascinating birds, they eat fish, and dive down into the water from heights of up to 120 ft to grab them with their feet. Then, they swoop off, shaking their bodies and their prey. Occasionally, they drop the fish but not very often. I'm amazed at how big a fish they can grab-sometimes it's as big as the bird.
There are nests all over: they build them on bridges, light poles, and sometimes on the ground. Many of the nests have been built on flat surfaces placed on top of light poles by environmental groups to help in their survival.

They are also known as Sea Hawks or Fish Hawks. An interesting fact: They can become completely submerged and fly off; unlike the Eagle who can only fly by and grab with it's feet.
Wouldn't You Like to be an Osprey?

Toni, there's something new I just learned. I didn't know they could submerge themselves! We have a very similar view of an Osprey sitting on the mast of a sailboat just across the canal from us!
Silvia, I couldn't remember when I took this picture so I wasn't sure if that was a mast or a flagpole :) finally figured it out--flagpole!
Hi Toni, Thanks for sharing this great photo! Enjoyed the post, have a wonderful week.
Hi Gary, thank you. Have a great day!
Thanks for sharing your pictures. I saw a red-tailed hawk in Maryland but was not able to get a photograph.
Hi Roy, thanks for stopping by. I'm sure you'll get the hawk next time. In the meantime, enjoy my Red-shouldered Hawk pictures at Red-shouldered Hawk on July 4th
Toni, nice photo and information!
Thanks, Tony!
Toni, it would be fun to be an osprey for a day! Looks like a carefree life! I did not know about these birds, thanks for sharing!
It would be fun, Joan. I love they way they soar and glide.
I got a picture of an Osprey on its light pole the other day in La Jolla. Hmmm. Now I’m wondering where that picture is. I’ll have to go find it. We have a lot of Ospreys here, but they are difficult to find.
When you take as many pictures as we do, Russel, sometimes it is hard to find them. That one was taken 3 years ago :) and I just came across it.
hahahhahhaah Anytime I hear the word raptor I think of those tiny little dinosaurs from back in the dinosaur era.
Oh, you mean those guys on Jurassic Park. The ones that ripped everyone apart :)
Yep!
