Pretty in Pink-Florida's Other Pink Bird-The Roseate Spoonbill

Roseate Spoonbills are not usually seen this far north in Florida so I was pleasantly surprised to step out onto my patio last night and see this guy. They are a very pretty pink and this one had the darker stripe on his wings. He must have been eating a lot of shrimp but not in my pond, I’m sure we don’t have any.

Kathy Streib posted about Spoonbills in Disney World earlier today too.

Spoonbills use their unique, spatulate bills to strain small food items.
I did see some of these guys about 2 years ago in another neighborhood; see Platypus in Trinity

They are a really pretty color with their darker pink feathers. Thought you might enjoy seeing our other pink bird.

Hi Toni - I always loved to see the spoonbills in Florida!  They were something that you could see quite well without binoculars.  : )  Great shots!

Toni, I've only ever seen them in the zoo.  Must be wonderful to see pink birds in your yard!  Are they talkative birds?

Toni.....Great photo....I bet it's great to look out and see them on a daily basis.......I've always thought about what it would be like to live close to the beach.

Kathy - you're welcome. And, yes, it was a wonderful sight.

Arleen- Mainly they are seen further south so I'm guessing not in your area?

Gloria - while I was out taking his picture; he was making a kind of crunk at the other birds in the pond if they came too close.

Chris - thank you.

Alexandra - it is wonderful to have wildlife around-like your seals. Thank you.

Rob - It's kind of neat to know that the beach is there and the ocean just beyond all the time. Thanks.

Great pictures of the Spoonbills!  So awesome to see them in your own backyard.  They really are pretty with the pink feathers... of course I am partial to pink anyway.  Thanks for sharing your great photos with us!!!

Love that dark pink, and how cool that they are right in your back yard.  I just have deer that come to eat my flowers.

Joan - he sure does. No, I think they are tropicals so you would see them in Denver ;) Thank you.

Linda - Thanks, it was awesome for us since they don't really hang out here often.

Tammy - we have those guys too and they do eat my flowers especially the Hibiscus. Thank you.

Toni--I have never seen a Roaseate Spoonbill even in the zoo or book.  Thanks for real pictures.

(I am so glad the AR fixed the problem with uploading photos otherwise I would not be able to enjoy your photos.)

Have a wonderful day.

What an unusual bird! I have never seen one before. Do they have any kind of call?

Posted by John McCarthy, Realtor - Seacoast NH (Bean Group Portsmouth NH) over 8 years ago

John- all I ever hear is kind of a "crunk" from them-almost sounds like a grunt.
