Let's Help Keep our Local Businesses Open

Let's Help Keep our Local Businesses Open

Going shopping for the holidays? We can generate a whole new tradition. This year Americans can give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Because there is-there always has been if you just look around.
  • It's time to think outside the box. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper? Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber?
  • Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.
  • Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small American-owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.
  • Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunking down your hard-earned money on a  Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer or a round of golf at the local golf course or a gift certificate at a local grocery store.
  • There are hundreds of restaurants -- all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast restaurant - this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.
  • How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?
  • Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning company for a day. I know I would!
  • How about a new savings account for your grandchild. I’m not sure if that would go over big with the kid.
  • OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make clothing, jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes.
  • Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or show at your hometown theatre..
  • Honestly,  do we REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.
  • You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine. THIS is the new American Christmas tradition.

  • Buy local; buy from your friendly neighborhood stores.

This is an American revolution of caring about each other, and isn't that what the holidays are all about?

BUY AMERICAN - BE AMERICAN the job you save might be your own......

Let's Help Keep our Local Businesses Open

This came to me from our West Pasco Chamber of Commerce President, Joe Alpine; he asked me to share it. I made some minor changes to it but thought it was worthy ofWest Pasco Chamber of Commerce sharing. The Chamber works hard to grow West Pasco and keep our local businesses viable.

I'm sure your community would like to do this too.

Toni -- Excellent!! My mantra exactly. Buy local and support small businesses. They are the heart of our economy. That is why I love to do posts that feature local businesses to hopefully help them get found and bring in he customers.

Toni,

I just had to click suggest!

As local business owners, who wouldn't want to reciprocate services from other local business owners. This is worthy of a feature and sparks some great ideas!

I pray it gets featured!!! These are the stories I like to read and appreciate.

Hi Toni, I have to agree with everyone else.  It is time to think and care for the American people, jobs and etc.  Am suggesting!

Posted by Judith Parker, CRS, GRI, CMRS, Charlotte, NC (ProStead Realty) over 6 years ago

Toni,  suggest, suggest.  This is so true, help the small business man and he helps by hiring people and then they need to save to buy homes and then we make more money!!!

Howdy and evening Toni

Toni, giving gift certificates and memberships to local businesses sure is the way to go. One of the biggest items which the Retail Chain Stores sale made overseas, is actually their own brand of items.

That's why they are able to sale their own brand at such a lower price and offer longer warranties on them, the Retail Chain Stores did not have to put much money into the items to be made.

Have a good one

Toni,

I love this and support the local businesses here in Crofton any time I can. I may need to stop supporting the local fast food drive thru's though.

Toni- I so agree with you.  One of the reasons I love going to our local Arts & Crafts shows is because I love to look for Christmas or any occasion gifts there.  Same reason we try to go to our local produce stands, and I know this isn't a product, but we try to frequent the local businesses... breakfast places, cleaners, etc because we don't want them to close.  And while we're at it... let's keep the call centers here in the U.S. as well.

Hi Toni,

Wow, I loved this after finding it as a result of a re-post by Judith.

Btw, seems to me like when we patronize a local business we shoud tell them why!

Imho small business is the back-bone of our country and we need to continue to support that for everyone's sake!

Posted by Lynda Eisenmann, Broker-Owner,CRS,CDPE,GRI,SRES, Brea,CA, Orange Co (Preferred Home Brokers) over 6 years ago

I really enjoy posts that stress the need for small business support. I don't see it as begging to help the little guy, I see small business as a big provider of jobs. We hear when the big companies lay off thousands of employees, but if hundreds of small businesses are closing its door, no one notices.

I have found that many small businesses can offer personal service, advice, and products that may not be offered by larger or web based businesses.

Thanks for the great post Toni.

Toni:

This is such a great idea.  We need to support our local businesses, especially in these difficult times.  Our local business association will be having a customer appreciation day.  Local merchants will be giving away prizes to enticed shoppers to their stores.  We should all support our local businesses.  They are the heart of our communities.

Toni: You have suggested many wonderful ideas. Gift certifcates to salons, local restaurants, and other services extend the holidays and help the community - truly a win - win.  As the Holidays approach, I keep thinking about all of the stuff we buy at Christmas - wrapped in horrible packaging and wrapped with all that paper and bows. How much of this stuff do we really need?

Posted by Anne M. Costello (Weidel Realtors) over 6 years ago

Good morning, Toni....what a great post....saw this on Judith's blog....local businesses can always use the business...they rely on Christmas shoppers to give their business a boost for the year....I love buying and receiving gift cards from local places.

Toni, You are always helping businesses in the New Port Richey area. Keeping the economy strong in your local area and buying American Made is a strong message ~ Gift cards from local area merchants is a terrific idea!

Toni I am suggesting also - there are some great ideas here.  Things we might not think of that would really help out our small businesses.  If everyone did just a little bit it could make a HUGE difference.  Terrific post!

Larry & Sheila - there are many more ideas but I didn't want to run on and on.

Debra - thank you. I hope everyone takes it to heart and does something. As you said, just a little bit would help.

All excellent suggestions about shopping local.  I am working to find more unique gifts this year.  I hope to frequent some of our local craft faires, to see what may be acquired.  The consummer has far greater power than they realize.  And collectively we could implement a turnaround in our economy.  I like that sentence of your's, "Do we REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house?"

Posted by Myrl Jeffcoat, Greater Sacramento Real Estate Agent (GreatWest Realty) over 6 years ago

Myrl - I do a lot of my holiday shopping at the local fairs and farmer's markets. Lots of good stuff there. The American consumer needs to be made aware that supporting their local people will help them too in the long run.
