Hernando County Courthouse - An Old Beauty in Brooksville, FL

Hernando County Courthouse - An Old Beauty in Brooksville, FL

The Old Hernando County Courthouse located in town of Brooksville is one of the prettiest buildings I have seen. Designed by William Augustus Edwards of Atlanta, the Courthouse was built in 1913 in the Beaux Arts style. It was named to the Guide to Florida Historic Architecture in 1989.

Hernando County is named after explorer Hernando DeSoto but had several other names over the past century and a half. At one point, in 1843, a proposal went out to name the county Amaxura (Spanish for Withlacoochee). The bill was amended to call the area Hernando.

Old Hernando County Courthouse

In 1844, the name was changed to Benton county after Missouri Sen. Thomas Hart Benton. By 1850, the name again became Hernando county due to the citizen's dislike of Benton’s unionist views.

Old Hernando County CourthouseAccording to Saturday Night Paranormal. the Old Courthouse is said to be haunted by a prisoner who tried to break out of the second floor jail; a bailiff wanted to scare him to make him stop, but shot him instead.

Hernando has a interesting, often colorful, history.

This lovely old tree stands out front.

Visit the courthouse Monday-Friday. 8am-5pm.

20 N. Main Street, Brooksville, FL.

I love those old buildings in Brooksville, Dade City, and Zephyrhills. I like the rolling hills out there too, very pretty part of our area!
