Internet Safety Tips For Kids

Internet Safety Tips For Kids

earth in hands

It’s important in these “everybody knows everything about everybody” times that we keep our kids as safe as possible.  The last post covered  stranger danger. This post will cover some internet safety tips. These tips are shared by the Pasco Sheriff’s Office.

  1. When online, always assume that everyone can see what you are doing and read what you are posting. What goes on the internet, stays on the internet-don’t post anything you don’t want known by the public everywhere.

kids on computers

  1. Never give your full name, your mailing address or home address, your phone number, your school name, or any personal information that could help someone identify you. This is important for everyone including your parents and other family members. As parents or grandparents, you should not be putting out that information on social networks.

  2. Never respond to any email, chat comments, instant messages or others that tell you not to listen to or share the comments with your parents. Especially hostile, or inappropriate comments, or any that make you feel uncomfortable.

  3. Never, ever agree to meet with someone you have been chatting with online. This can be the most dangerous thing you can do. People can create all types of profiles with pictures online that are not real. Be very careful if they tell you that your parents don't appreciate you or love you.

  4. Don’t be afraid or ashamed to tell your parents if anything makes you uncomfortable, show the message to your parents but don’t respond to the message because that just encourages more responses. Talk to your parents and follow their rules for going online. Your parents can help you decide what is good and what isn’t.

For more safety tips visit the Pasco Sheriff’s office website here. Or your local law enforcement office.

Pasco County, FL is a great place to live and we want to keep all our children safe and at home where they belong.

Posted by William Johnson, Retired Real Estate Professional (Retired) over 6 years ago

Mark L - so true and so unfortunate that we have to do this.

Sharon - you're right!

Bob - everyone in the family needs to know this. Aunts and uncles talk about their nieces and nephews and state the schools they go to. They shouldn't do that.

Alexandra - I got a lot of the info from our sheriff's dept. They do excellent programs for the schools too.

Sharon - I agree.

Patrick - thanks for stopping by.

Belinda - we sure do; there are all kinds of threats out there.

Rich - I like the analogy--very accurate.

William - I think that if we don't have little ones around, we don't think about it. Thanks.

Great tips and definitely something to discuss, not just share, with children.  They tend to believe nothing bad will happen if "they" do this or that.  Reduce their exposure to risk and have them learn to make smart choices.

I think these are well done.  Not to overlly alarm kids but to make them alert and aware what frequently happens on these sites and to keep their parents in mind when uncomfortable.

Toni, great tips for parents, and young internet surfers.  It is the same lessons that we have been teaching for years, just applied to the electronic media.

Posted by Rob Lyszczarz (RE/MAX Properties Unlimited) over 6 years ago

Parents should look at internet blocks available for younger children.  Make sure they can't get to any of the sites where they can get into trouble.  Don't give a child unlimited access to a computer unsupervised.

Instant Maryland reblog with this header...My favorite line on this post is that what goes on the Internet stays on the Internet. These are some valuable tips for children. If it makes you uncomfortable, do not engage with the sender. Or tell your parents. Do not meet anyone. Do not give much information. Great guidance in this post!

Good evening Toni -

Your post on internet safety is most important and something we all need to be mindful of. Debbie has shared your information with the older grand-kids. We both are constantly telling, texting or emailing them of the dangers that sharing too much info on social media. Not that they listen but we keep on reinforcing. Congrats on the feature!
